The use of cosmetics is meant to make one feel beautiful and confident. However, the use of some ingredients, processing methods and compounds has produced the opposite result. This explains the rise in demand for clean cosmetics. Since this is a trending word, how can you spot such cosmetics on shelves when buying?

Identify what clean means for you. Each person has a unique reaction to a product or ingredient. It means that your tolerance level will differ. What produces a nasty reaction for you might not have the same effect on another person. You have to perform a personal test before claiming that a particular product is unclean.

Check for ingredients indicated on the label before buying. There are ingredients that have already been flagged as unsafe for skin products or particular types of skins. Manufacturers are also required to indicate the compounds or ingredients they have used on all their products. Beyond the ingredients, their derivatives should also be checked because their effect could be similar. The ingredients or their combination could be provided in the form of a label. Watch for such labels before buying.

Buy brands that are known to produce safe products. A lot of companies have paid attention to the need for clean products. Market leaders have set the trend and many others are catching up. You will see their campaigns and sensitization messages to the public on different products. The media will also highlight their exploits, recognition and confessions from users. Stick to such products for your safety.

Media reviews of cosmetic products will also guide you when making a choice. The reviews should be on outlets, magazines and shows that are credible. The outlets must provide authentic information about these products and not in the form of promotions or adverts. Endorsement by reputable celebrities and experts on the strength of being clean or not clean is also a reliable guide.

Recommendation from friends will help you sort the many products available in the market easily. Friends are already using these products and have a real experience to share. If your friend has a fair skin and is not getting into trouble with the products he or she is using, you can try them. They will also tell you about the cost and whether it has long term effects. Friends are reliable because they do not have commercial interest to protect.

Public reviews are highly reliable when buying beauty products. The reviews should be on independent platforms where manufacturers or marketers do not have any influence. Websites selling these products, consumer insight platforms and social media are reliable sources of public reviews. Public reviews provide the most unfiltered assessment of the performance of a product.

What do regulators say about a particular product? There are products with a clean bill of health. Others will be flagged for containing unclean compounds or ingredients. Some products have to contain a label or sign that they are using particular ingredients. Watch for work from regulators to stay safe.

The effect you are seeing on the skin could result from other products. Food, the environment or other biological processes could be to blame. Ascertain that the effect is from the cosmetic product used before making a verdict on whether a product is clean or unclean.
