Osteoporosis is a medical condition that is characterized by the weakening of the bones. Needless to say, it is something that can increase one's risk of having a fracture. Anyone may end up suffering from osteoporosis in the future. However, health authorities confirm that women have a higher chance of developing it primarily due to menopause. The good news is there's hormone replacement therapy or HRT that can help lower a woman's odds of ending up with the problem.

Estrogen is something that helps keep the bones from becoming frail and brittle. It's just one of the many tasks that this particular hormone carries out. For as long as there's plenty of this naturally-existing chemical in the body, ending up with osteoporosis should not be a major cause for alarm among women.

Unfortunately, when menopause hits the levels of estrogen suddenly drop dramatically. This is the very reason why menopause is considered as a prime risk factor for osteoporosis. It's also due to this exactly why the bone disease is not very common among men who are not bound to experience menopause.

Osteoporosis can diminish the quality of life most especially if a fracture is around. Such problem can keep a woman from having a day that's enjoyable, meaningful and productive. Actually, a fracture can make carrying out most common physical activities so challenging. Having a hip fracture is very much likely to happen, and it's something that entails undergoing surgery that comes with a very steep price tag and some very serious health risks.

HRT can help save women from encountering osteoporosis and the various problems that may stem from it. Such is perfect most especially for those who may wind up with the serious bone disease because of various other reasons. Aside from osteoporosis, HRT is known to effectively address the many other issues associated with menopause due to the fact that it encourages restored balance of the female hormones.

HRT can also help with alleviating hot flashes, which is one of the most annoying symptoms of being in the menopausal stage. Such can be a massive problem especially if it takes place at night as it can keep a woman from having a good night's sleep. Other issues that HRT can manage are mood swings, appetite changes, weight gain and hair loss.

Sadly, just like with any other therapies out there, a few risks are associated with HRT. It's for this reason why it is contraindicated for some menopausal women. For instance, it is not recommended for those who are at high risk of having breast cancer. It's also not intended for women who have heart disease or may develop it.

Aside from undergoing HRT, there are other things that may be done in order to fend off osteoporosis that has something to do with menopause. It's a good idea for women to opt for an everyday diet that's rich in calcium and vitamin D. Exercising on a regular basis is highly recommended, too. Certainly, cigarette smoking and excessive alcohol intake should be avoided by women.
