Pregnancy is a very special time for most women. The very idea that one is carrying a new life within oneself fills many people with wonder. Of course, being pregnant is not a particularly dangerous time, but it certainly can become so. That is why so many pregnant women and their loved ones want to make sure that they receive the very best care possible in order to make sure both the mother and the baby remains safe. With help from an obstetrician Waco families can look forward to a peaceful pregnancy.

It is a common misconception to think that gynaecology and obstetrics are one and the same thing. Gynaecologists are concerned with the female reproductive system and the organs involved in general, but the obstetrician is more focused on the treatment of pregnant women. Obstetricians do not focus solely on the pregnant woman, but also on the unborn foetus. Some practitioners are qualified to fulfil both roles.

There are those that argue that pregnancy and birth is a natural process. In fact, almost all doctors can deliver babies and many pregnant women even prefer the services of a midwife. This is fine as long as there are no complications and as long as the health, or even life, of the mother and baby is not in danger. Obstetricians are highly qualified specialists and many patients simply do not want to take any chances.

House doctors can certainly look after pregnant patients but they are not equipped or experienced in diagnosing more serious problems. This is exactly what obstetricians are qualified for. They can identify potential problems very early during the pregnancy and in many cases they can solve problems before they even occur. They can sometimes even correct potential problems with micro surgery before the baby is even born.

The vast majority of births proceed without any unusual problems, but there are a number of things that can go terribly wrong, endangering the life of the either the mother, the baby or even both. In such cases the presence of of a specialist is of vital importance. There is much they can do to ease difficult births, including surgery.

Obstetricians will not take long term care of the mother and newly born baby, but they will pay close attention for the period immediately after birth. This is especially important if it was a problematic birth. Sometimes the baby needs immediate medical care, very specific nutrition or even surgery. The mother may need similar care. Once the baby and mother are both declared healthy, the obstetricians relinquish the patient.

Most women see a gynaecologist from time to time. When they become pregnant, however, they need an obstetrician. When planning a pregnancy, many women move to a gynaecologist that is also qualified in obstetrics. This makes things easier for the patient and she does not have to see different specialists when she becomes pregnant.

Losing a baby is heartbreaking. So is giving birth to a baby with defects that could have been prevented if only proper care was obtained early enough. Obstetricians can provide peace of mind and while they are not miracle workers, they can do a lot.
