Hernias occur when internal organs or other parts of the body get to protrude through tissues or walls keep them in place. Most of them are experienced at the abdomen, at the area between hips and the chest. The effect is also experienced at the belly button, groin and upper thighs. Hernias are of various types. As regards what the cause of the condition is, there are a number of causes. In the cases of inguinal and femoral hernia, the cause is weakened muscles. Such muscles might have been there from the time one was born. The other cause of weak muscles is aging and strain which is exerted on the abdomen and groin. Adults can get umbilical hernias because of strains in their abdomen or because of overweight.

There are a number of symptoms that one has the condition. When you suffer from the condition and it has an effect on the abdomen or groin, there is noticeable lump that can be pushed back. When one is lying down, the lump disappears. There are instances in which the lump can reappear, for instance when one coughs, laughs or strains as they move bowels. There are other symptoms like pain during lifting, pain at the place with the bulge or dull aching sensation.

As regards the diagnosis, it is possible to see or feel a bulge in the affected area. That is done by a physical exam. For males, the doctor will feel the area around testicles and groin. While the doctor feels those areas, the patient will be asked to cough. In some instances, there is use of soft-tissue imaging such as CT scan.

It is not common for hernias to get better without treatment. Surgery is the surest way to have them managed. It is however a doctor who will recommend best remedy for them. A surgeon will be needed for treatment.

If they are not treated, hernias might grow larger. They may also become more painful. One could also develop complications.
