Legal assistant re also referred to as paralegals. The term paralegal refers to people who perform significant legal work under the authority of the law in a place. In the absence of the legal assistant, the work they do would have to be performed by an attorney. That means that paralegals are important professionals in the legal profession. Legal assistants have lots of responsibilities. Their job specifications may differ depending on their employer. Conducting legal research and offering presentation is one of their most crucial responsibilities. They have a duty of conducting relevant research to every case that a lawyer is working on and presenting it. They must get all information related to that particular case to in order to assist the attorney in preparation of trails, meetings, closings, and hearings.

Identification of legal articles, proper laws, and judicial decision related to cases is what paralegals do apart from researching facts pertaining to a specific case. All the data that is collected is also examined by them followed by production of reports. Once done and availed to the attorney, the lawyer reads the report and decides the way to progress with the case. The assistants also provide clients with presentations.

Another crucial responsibility that paralegals handle is to interview clients and other parties. Initial interviews that clients have with the legal counsel are usually not handled by paralegals. That is the work of attorneys. However, paralegals have to be available to take notes and to gain an understanding of the situation. This allows them to be able to handle subsequent interviews with witnesses and clients from a point of knowledge.

The most demanding job that paralegals handle is to draft legal documents. As such, it is important for one to be good in written communication. Documents drafted include legal briefs, interrogatories, pretrial orders, deposition notices, subpoenas, and complaints among others. They must also ensure that the documents they draft are delivered to the intended recipient in a timely manner.

Legal assistants also tackle numerous works that involve office administration. Maintaining reference lists, taking phone calls, filing papers, and calling witnesses, clients, court personnel, and other lawyers are some of the office administration duties they handle. The calendar and/or timetable that attorneys work with are also prepared by legal assistants.
