The minority is a group of the population that is unlike the majority. Such may be classified on the basis of religion, sexual orientation, culture among others. The need for diversified nursing students has grown overwhelmingly in hospitals and other healthcare facilities as they strive to have an all-inclusive workforce of nurses. Minority nurses are able to establish a good rapport with clients from similar cultures easily hence trust in earned easily. This is mainly because of the growing minority populations in many countries due to immigration and intermarriage with locals. Here is a summary on health promotion for minority nurses and students.

A high population of minority immigrants has poor language skills which make it hard to attend to them when they are in need of medical attention. These individuals are often unable to express themselves clearly to the practitioners. Cultural beliefs relating to treatment may also get in the way hence more the need to have nurses who understand the language and culture of such individuals.

Nursing schools are having developed interest in admitting learners from underrepresented cultures who desire to practice holistic education. This is a move that can only be fueled if they receive many applications from such individuals. The numbers however still remain low despite the campaigns to encourage minority applications.

Affirmative action has gone a long way in helping minorities secure learning positions in top-notch institutions. However, the policies have not come up without contradictions from courts and other interested parties. Considering race as one of the factors during admission of learners has been objected as racism admission slots should only be given on the basis of merit. Diverse classrooms should also be considered as being crucial to the system regardless of how they are achieved.

In spite of these tools and mechanisms being put in place to encourage minor applicants, the retention rate is low. Most of them drop out of school because of factors like finance, family, and work. Nursing schools are thus working to ensure they provide financial aid for those in need of it. Increasing the accessibility of classes for those tangled up in family or work will also raise the retention rate.

Despite receiving a lot of support from learning institutions, some minorities still face challenges because of being in school with other learners from different backgrounds. The students experience bias when it comes to academic ability, faculty role play models and even peer to peer support.

Selective admission processes work to help the underrepresented students. Academic profiling sometimes leaves out some qualified minorities however as a number of them have pressure from their backgrounds because of being the first in their communities to attend higher education. Being considered as the saviors to their parents or siblings comes with the pressure that some of them are unable to contain.

Health promotions require being done at every level in the health industry, from schools to workplaces in order to encourage diversification of the nursing workforce that will be able to cater for the growing needs of the people. Although minorities may have difficulty adjusting at first, their impact cannot be overlooked.
