As much as learning a new language can be fun, it can also be tough. You will have to put in a lot of effort if you want to get fluent at it. As much as it is important to learn theory, it is also important that you grasp the practical skills and actually learn to speak the language well. Here are some ideas on enhancing your English speaking skills.

Practice practice, practice. That is how you are going to get better. The more you practice, the more fluent you will become. If possible, practice with a native speaker of the language. You can identify a native speaker that you can practice with. Alternatively, if you live in the same community as the speakers of the language, then take every opportunity you get to speak with them.

When learning the language, practice not just new words but also new phrases. It is possible for you to know a whole list of words but still not be able to make a complete sentence. So, practice how to use the words you have learned in sentences. Master different sentences, so that if different situations come up, you can use one of the sentences that you have learned.

When you are talking to other people, learn to listen to them keenly, so that you can pick up new words. Do not spend your time concentrating too hard on what you are going to say in return. Listen to the way they pronounce the words and their intonations. If there is anything that you do not understand, ask them for clarification.

Try as much as possible to use the new language when you are thinking. The advantage of this is you will save yourself time spent translating the language to a different one in your mind and when you are conversing with others.

Practice by yourself, when you are all alone. Speak loudly to yourself. If you want, you can even practice when looking at your own reflection in the mirror, as if you are talking to someone else. Practice saying whole sentences or paragraphs fluently.

Find TV shows in the language that you are trying to learn and watch them. If possible, find shows which have subtitles. They will help you pick up new words, as you are watching them. This will help to improve your fluency. Pause the programs and repeat the words that the characters are saying. Also, find videos and songs that you can sing along to. It will help you to familiarize yourself with the words used.

Do not be too uptight about learning the language, so that you beat yourself up anytime you do not get the words right. Relax and just know that getting things wrong is part of the process. When this happens, take a step back and try again. Most people would understand that you are not a native speaker, so they won't expect you to be perfect. The best thing is to slow things down and speak more slowly.
