Conventional medical doctors typically prescribe pharmaceuticals for patients suffering from migraine headaches. These can become habit-forming and only mask symptoms, or sometimes provide no relief at all. Chiropractic care is a natural alternative which seeks to address underlying causes of migraines and other painful conditions.

Patients who pursue chiropractic solutions to managing migraines can avoid unpleasant, potentially dangerous side effects associated with painkillers and other headache medications. Over-the-counter and prescription pain-relievers (including non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs) can induce a stroke, heart attack, stomach ulcers, and kidney damage. Triptans increase serotonin levels in the brain, constricting blood vessels to reduce inflammation. Side effects produced by this class of drugs include tightness in the chest or throat, numbness and tingling in the toes, vertigo, and drowsiness.

Anti-nausea medications that are used to alleviate the nausea migraines cause are known to cause drowsiness and dizziness as well.

Dietary deficiencies are among the numerous factors that are known to cause recurring and severe headaches. For instance, magnesium is an essential mineral that plays a role in numerous body processes. It assists in the regulation of stress which is why it's possible to deplete the magnesium supply fast. If this ever occurs, things like lowered mood, migraine, aching muscles, constipation and fatigue are likely to develop. You can also suffer from migraines as the result of Vitamin B deficiencies.

Severe headaches may also be the result of hypothyroidism (low thyroid function). This condition is characterized by weight gain, hair loss, low mood, and cold hands and feet. Many people with an under active thyroid also report fatigue, headaches or migraines, and low sex drive. Cases of hypothyroidism frequently go undetected because doctors don't administer the comprehensive testing necessary to identify it.

Food allergies can also be responsible for causing migraines. Patients may need to undergo a battery of tests to see which foods are triggering their headaches.

Additionally, spinal misalignments that place pressure on surrounding nerves have been known to contribute to severe headaches. Correcting these misalignments allows for uninterrupted nerve function, which alleviates symptoms.

Chiropractic care targets root causes of pain to provide effective, long-lasting relief.
