It has been said that no one ever injured their eye sight by looking on the bright side of things. With that being said, we all can agree with this lighthearted quotation in that care for our eye sight is important for our physical and mental health for a brighter side of living. Knowing how to best address any issues we may have that impact our sight is the key to maintaining good vision. This article highlights the three main eye care professionals; opticians, optometrists and Ophthalmologist San Antonio TX.

Even if you do not receive any advice from your family doctor about visiting an ophthalmologist, it may be a good idea to do so in some cases. If you have a family history of eye problems, including those that come on later in life such as cataracts, you should maintain a presence with the eye doctor.

Additionally, African Americans who are over the age of 40 should also have regular screenings by a specialist. Those who have diabetes at any age need this type of careful monitoring. If you already have a personal history of eye injury or illness, you should work with a provider on a regular basis.

Retinal Diseases stands out as another eye threat. A layer of nerve cells at the back of the eyeball, the retina delivers light impulses to the brain, where they are recognized as visual images. Because it is an extremely delicate, intricate structure, the retina is vulnerable to a number of different diseases and disorders. Probably the most common of these is age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The disease affects a small area at the center of the retina called the macula, causing a decline in visual acuity. An estimated 15 million Americans struggle with it on a daily basis. As long as they are caught early, conditions that strike the retina can be managed successfully with medical treatment.

Conditions like strabismus or crossed eyes, amblyopia or lazy eye, ptosis or dropping upper eyelids and refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism require regular treatment. These are often determined at the child's initial screening. If they are present, your doctor will tell you what steps to take to improve your child's vision if it is possible to do so. The good news is that catching conditions like this early can help your child to avoid problems that are more complex later.

It is only ophthalmologists who can provide the full spectrum of eye care, from prescribing glasses and/or contact lenses to performing a broad spectrum of eye surgeries. There are ophthalmologists who will choose to specialize in a specific type of ophthalmological care, such as retina, cornea, glaucoma, pediatrics, refractive surgery, or pathology. These medical specialists must receive additional schooling and hospital-based based residency.

The three professional work together to make and fill the prescriptions that their patients require. Depending on the severity of the visual disorder in question, this treatment may vary. This means knowledge of how to use the grinders is needed, as well as the lensometers and also microscopes. This is why these techs are sometimes called manufacturing optician.

Of course, not all ocular issues are solely vision related, and even people with 20/20 vision may still find themselves in need of professional eye care. An ophthalmologist can help with conditions like chronically dry eyes and pinkeye. It's also a good idea for everyone, regardless of the state of their vision, to routinely undergo an eye exam. Most people already get their vision checked every few years for their driver's license.
