Young people are getting exposed to things that facilitate alcohol and substance abuse. They get the idea that rich and successful people often use these substances to deal with the amount of stress they are facing in their everyday lives. They can see it in magazines, televisions and social media platforms. What they do not realize is that these drugs eventually expose them to risk factors that are likely to affect their performances in school and their relationships with friends and relatives. As a result, they need to be educated through a good drug education program to enable them to change their views.

To qualify as a mentor, you need to be a nonjudgmental person who understands the physical and psychological changes that young people face in their lives. You need to possess a caring heart so that the child can tell you his/her problems. That way, you shall be able to inform them on what they are going through and to help them in the process. At the end of the session, the student is able to make independent decisions whether to take the right path or not.

To make the sessions more interesting, the facilitators have taken advantage of audio visual aids to explain their plights. This is evident in the number of DVDs and books that they have released for public consumption. Once the individual gets his/her hands on such like items, he/she can get the general idea behind the prevention and education forums.

In 2011, a group of young people formed an organization known as YOU. It stands for Youth Ownership Understanding. The program initiates an idea to facilitate the prevention of substance abuse. Most of the facilitators are volunteers that have experienced the harmful effects that are caused by drugs.

These programs often target schools since they are likely to find students there. They will conduct studies by interviewing them. What they have discussed will act as findings for the next subject matter to be discussed during the forum. Once they are certain on the findings, they can use it to explain the current situation.

Based on the findings, the programs will monitor the new trends that are emerging. That way, they are able to come up with meaningful strategies to help them to counter the bad habit. The presentations are bases on factual situations on the current status of youth.

The studies have revealed that most young people test the drugs whenever they are bored. That is why these forums are created to help the young person to have a purpose in life. If he/she is taken through a mentorship program, then he/she will not find time to abuse these substances.

What a young person does not know is that the end result of a prolonged substance abuse is often worse. Your supplier may be aware of the risks that are involved but may choose to ignore the warning signs. Their main aim is to sell as much drugs as possible to make profits. In the long run, the victim may encounter ill health or even death.
