The first time you try acupuncture, you might wonder if you are doing something rational and based on science. While the science of acupuncture for headache relief is far from completely understood, studies indicate that it reduces pain and has good results for long term impacts. Participants suffering from tension headaches, migraines, and head and neck aches said that the sessions reduced or eliminated their discomfort.

In 2012, according to Harvard, individuals that participated in acupuncture to reduce migraines as well as tension headaches had positive results. Specifically, acupuncture helped provide headache relief for study participants and reduced the frequency or severity of the subjects' headaches.

If you want to try this type of therapy, look for an acupuncturist who works in headache relief. Additionally, bring along a list of any questions that you have about this care and the various chiropractic methods that are used along with it to relieve headaches.

Acupuncture versus Acupressure

During acupuncture, approximately four to ten needles are inserted by the practitioner into specific pressure points. These are lest in place for up to 30 minutes until pain is alleviated. People typically have between six and 12 acupuncture sessions over a three-month period.

Acupuressure is quite similar in science in methodology. There are no needles in acupressure. Chiropractors instead use their hands to apply a certain amount of pressure on various points across the body to give their patients relief. This is an incredibly natural strategy for improving well-being and comfort for those who suffer from headaches.

Instead of taking up to six aspirin or ibuprofen for pain every day, it's worth it to make an appointment with your chiropractor to set up a session. At the very least, call and see what the procedure could do for your specific type of headache. Like chiropractic care, acupuncture offers an alternative to medication and allows your body a natural way to heal itself.
