Selling a product is just like selling a website, and both are just like selling a personality. No matter what you're selling online, be it your expertise or your company's product, you have to amass a library of techniques which are successful. Here are some ideas we've used ourselves which can get you started or diversify your strategies.

One key to enhancing the visibility of your website, is to update your content frequently. This serves a dual purpose. First, frequent updates keep your content current and fresh, encouraging existing viewers to check back often for new and relevant information. But frequent updating also signals to the search engines that you are actively engaged in maintaining your website and your efforts can be rewarded with higher rankings in the search results.

Survey site visitors about what they'd like to see on the website. This builds a relationship with your site visitors; they think you care about what they want, and are trying to give them what they ask for. A survey can also give you feedback about a product or a service.

Use your email list to build a relationship with your customers. If you are just sending out form letters with no personal content, eventually your emails are going to be hitting the spam folders. Include content that will make your readers willing to open and read your emails.

Provide examples of problems that people may be looking for a resolution to and very subtly, weave in a recommendation of a quality product in the content. This will make it very easy for the readers to find the product as soon as they are ready to make the purchase.

When you ship out a product, include a flyer or coupon for a discount the next time they purchase something from your website. This will help to encourage repeat business, as many people are powerless to resist the lure of the sale price. Including a flyer will also help remind people where they purchased the product in case they want more.

To help you market your product and/or service, you should have a decent web presence. It will be hard to market something if you only use social networks. What you will want is a professionally designed web page which highlights your strengths and the benefits of your product or service.

Offer something for free when a customer visits your website. Have visitors fill out a form with their address and send them items with your business name and logo on them. Whether it is a pen or a t-shirt, it puts your business name out there and gets your business noticed.

Internet marketing can be a very fickle business, so always remember never to become too attached to any one idea or approach. For every success you achieve, you'll probably experience at least three failures. Make sure that you're always ready to cut your losses and walk away if something isn't working well.
